Objectives

Objectives General objective· To assess iron supplement utilization and associated factors during pregnancy that are having antenatal follow up at Lideta sub city health centers.Specific objectives· To assess utilization of iron supplement among pregnant women.· To identify factors associated with iron utilization during pregnancy.

Methods

A facility based cross sectional study design used to conduct the study from May to July 2015 in five health centers which are found in Lideta sub city. Five hundred pregnant women were enrolled using simple random sampling technique with a response rate of 98%. A pre-tested structured questionnaire used for data collection and the data was entered in to EPI-Info version 3.5.1 and data cleaning done then the data exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis.

Results

In this study, those pregnant women who were on their first trimester supplemented with iron for the recommended duration compared to those who were on their third trimester with an adjusted OR 3.117, 95% CI (1.198-8.112). And pregnant women who have knowledge of anemia supplemented with iron for the recommended duration compared to those who have no knowledge of anemia with an adjusted OR 0.653, 95% CI (0.431-0.988). Pregnant women who receive information about the importance of iron supplement during pregnancy supplemented with iron for the recommend duration with an adjusted OR 3.809, 95% CI (2.614-5.551).

Conclusions

Gestational age, knowledge towards anemia and receive information about the importance of iron supplement are essentials strategies in promoting iron supplement utilization during pregnancy.
