The Increasing Importance of Nutrition Resilience

The world is being confronted by multiple, complex, cascading challenges and shocks that have a profound impact human well-being, including nutrition and micronutrient security. The ongoing global food crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the deep vulnerabilities faced by populations worldwide, with a disproportionate burden on women.  As climate-change and conflicts worsen food security and nutrition challenges, optimizing the health and resilience of populations in the face of current and future shocks is critical as we strive to protect and nourish future generations.

Achieving the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development in an era of crisis upon crises depends on our ability to strengthen the resilience of individuals, populations, and the systems they rely on. The Micronutrient Forum’s 6th Global Conference, Nutrition for Resilience, held 16-20 October 2023 in The Hague and online, brought together experts from over 100 countries to advance integrated research and multi-sectoral programs, and to promote innovative micronutrient policy solutions and investments.

At the closing of the conference, a Way Forward Statement was presented on behalf of more than 50 global experts from research, academia, program, and policy institutions. The statement includes six evidence-based recommendations for immediate action by community, national, regional, and global leaders, aiming to guide policymakers and funders in fulfilling the promises of the Sustainable Development Goals and to protect nutrition and health in the face of unprecedented crises.
